Snake plants are the cool, quiet achievers of the plant world. They don’t fuss, they don’t flop, and they absolutely don’t care if you forget to water them for a fortnight.Â
With tall, sculptural leaves and a ‘set and forget’ attitude, they’re ideal for beginners or anyone who likes their greenery a little more hands-off.
What makes a Snake plant special?
It’s not just the looks, although they do make a statement. Snake plants are slow-growing and hardy. You’ll find them in all kinds of colour patterns, from deep greens to bright yellow-edged stripes. They suit just about any room, from sunlit studies to dim hallways.
Light: low-key and low light friendly
Snake plants will take what they get. Bright, indirect light is ideal, but they’re also fine in lower-light corners. Just keep them out of harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. They’re basically the plant equivalent of ‘easy-going housemate’.
Water: less is more
This is where most people go wrong. Snake plants hate soggy soil. Water deeply, then let it dry right out In warmer months, once every 2-3 weeks is plenty. In winter once a month (or even less) will do.
Soil and potting: no soggy bottoms, please
Use a well-draining potting mix  like a cactus or succulent blend. And make sure your pot has a drainage hole. Sitting in water is the fastest way to make your snake plant sulk.
Feeding: low appetite
They’re not hungry plants. A diluted liquid fertiliser every couple of months during spring and summer is enough. Don’t bother in the cooler months because they’ll just ignore it.
Common issues
-
Mushy leaves: Too much water
 -
Wrinkly or soft leaves: Possibly too dry, but rare
 -
Brown tips: Maybe dry air or underwatering - or just being dramatic
 -
Pests: Uncommon, but a gentle leaf wipe now and then keeps things tidy
